Chapter

Twelve

Ferrix smiled as his mother and Kat descended the stairs. His father, sisters, and he gathered in the foyer, ready to head to the central hall, where everyone came together for meals. The stone walls gleamed from the grey starlight streaming in from the skylight above them. His mother had insisted they dress more formally since it was the first time anyone would lay eyes on the mates they’d brought back from Earth. Ferrix ran his fingers along the white fur lining his cuff. His mother wore a red dress with silver embroidery that reflected the moon’s light like a solitary firefly drifting through the night.

His jaw dropped as he took in the vision of his mate standing beside his mother. She wore a dark green dress that sparkled with every step, and it hugged her curves and flared outward as it touched the floor. She was barefoot, but her feet were scrubbed clean, and her toenails painted a pale pink. Her hair was pinned up on one side, cascading down over her shoulder until it rested at the small of her back. She was breathtaking; it was all he could do to keep his hands to himself.

As soon as they reached the end of the stairs, he took her hand and squeezed it. She smiled, her eyes sparkling and a rosy pink coloring her cheeks. Then lines of stress deepened around her eyes, but she smiled and welcomed the touch of his mother’s hand on her shoulder.

Hindra smiled. “I’m so happy you’re here.”

“Thank you for welcoming me,” Kat replied, her voice soft and shy.

“You’re so welcome, darling. You’re with family now, and I hope you’re hungry. The hall is always stocked with plenty of food.”

“You look beautiful,” Azzurra said.

She and Lemmy were wearing the dresses he’d brought back from Earth. He was stunned at how grown up they both looked, but Lemmy caught him staring and stuck out her tongue. Ferrix winked at her, and she grinned back at him. Despite their angular cheekbones, tiny waist, and slight curves, they were still girls.

“Well, let’s eat! I’m sure you’re both hungry from the journey.” Hindra steered them from the foyer and out the front door.

Lennox and his sisters followed them out into the crisp night air. Kat tucked her small hand into his and walked beside him. Ferrix laced their fingers together, holding on to their bond. He didn’t want to let her go, and he certainly didn’t want her out of his sight. A nagging feeling that something bad would happen formed a knot in his stomach. Now that he’d found her, he wasn’t going to lose her.

“You look stunning.” Ferrix squeezed her hand again.

Kat blushed but beamed up at him. “Thank you.”

“You would look beautiful in anything, but I prefer you in nothing at all.”

“I’ll remember that for next time," Kat said, amusement flaring in her gaze.

Ferrix chuckled. “I’m sure you will.”

“Don’t be naughty.” His mother wagged a finger at him with a smile.

“I’m not. I’m only giving my mate a playful nudge.
